Indian Republic Day commemorated in Sri Lanka
View(s):India’s 77th Republic Day was commemorated in Colombo on Monday, January 26 with official and cultural events hosted by the High Commission of India.
The main ceremony was held at India House, where High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka Santosh Jha hoisted the Indian national flag and inspected a Guard of Honour. He also read excerpts from the Republic Day address of the President of India.
The celebrations included music performed by the Sri Lanka Navy Band and a cultural programme organised by the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre, the High Commission’s cultural arm.
This year’s observances also marked the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram, India’s national song. Written by Bankim Chandra Chatterjee in 1875 and later popularised through his novel Anandamath, Vande Mataram, meaning “Mother, I bow to thee”, has long been associated with India’s freedom movement.
Earlier in the day, the High Commissioner and officials of the High Commission paid floral tributes at the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) memorial, honouring Indian personnel who lost their lives during the IPKF mission in Sri Lanka.
As part of Republic Day-related events, a concert titled “Timeless Bollywood Melodies: Anuradha Paudwal Live in Sri Lanka” was held on January 23, celebrating cultural links between the two countries. Two Indian Coast Guard ships, Varaha and Atulya, also arrived in Sri Lanka and are scheduled to visit Colombo and Galle from January 24 to 27.
A ceremonial reception was held at India House on January 26, attended by Sri Lankan dignitaries from across sectors. Republic Day was also observed by Indian diplomatic missions in Hambantota, Jaffna and Kandy through separate events.
