The Attorney General’s Department Legal Officers’ Association has unanimously passed a resolution taking notice and expressing grave concern over the recent “vituperative, unfounded, repeated personal attacks” on Attorney General Parinda Ranasinghe.

The resolution—adopted on Friday by the association under its president, Deputy Solicitor General Madhawa Tennakoon, and secretary, Senior State Counsel Mihiri De Alwis—states the attacks are clearly indicative of coordinated measures to pressurise the AG and the officers of his department in the discharge of their official duties and, as such, strike at the root of the independence of the AG’s Department and its officers.

The association said it strongly believes that these kinds of attacks on the independent functioning of the AG’s Department, if unchecked, would inevitably lead to irremediable damage to the administration of justice, the rule of law and democracy, and ultimately undermine the truth owed to the people.

The association also appreciated the strong stand taken by the Bar Association of Sri Lanka and the outpouring of support amongst the legal fraternity and persons of public standing, “who are well aware of the integrity, fairness and impartiality of AG Parinda Ranasinghe as well as the large volume of work carried out by the officers of the Attorney General’s Department under his stewardship, notwithstanding the serious lack of personnel and resources.”

The association requested all stakeholders to take all steps in their power to counter misinformation and prevent the mischief sought to be effected, “because repeated attacks of this nature cause serious demoralisation, disaffection and dissatisfaction amongst the officers of the Attorney General’s Department, which in turn will result in the inability to provide optimum services for the State and the People of Sri Lanka.” It also expressed its fullest confidence in AG Parinda Ranasinghe and urged the public to refrain from circulating social media posts which carry unsubstantiated allegations and unverified information.

Meanwhile, the association also held a “brainstorming session on improving the efficiency and independence of the department” on Friday.

During the session, the state law officers engaged in structured deliberations aimed at strengthening the efficiency and independence of the Department across four key thematic areas – structural, legal, procedural, and ethical improvements. This is the first such collective exercise undertaken by officers of the department in its more than 140-year history.
