The total damages caused to the railway and road network in the country by Cyclone Ditwah exceeds more than Rs 320 billion, according to the final estimates of the damages by the Ministry of Finance.

Of this, the damage to road network including bridges is around Rs 190 billion, while the damage to the railway network including tracks and signaling systems is around Rs 130 billion.

A total of 1,400 kilometers of road have been damaged in the cyclone with extensive damages to bridges including the Yaka Palama in Peradeniya. “We will repair the Yaka Palama and also build a two track new bridge parallel to it,” government officials said.

The railway tracks that need to be replaced are mainly on the upcountry line along with the signaling system. Funds from the Indian credit line will be used to repair the Mannar-Kankasanthurai line while an Indian grant will be used for the Rambukkana-Peradeniya stretch.

The government is also in discussions with China to obtain funds for the repairs to the damaged railway signaling system, the official said.
