Environmental groups warn that the invasive plant known as ‘Yodha Nidikumba’ (Mimosa pigra), is rapidly engulfing the central region of the country.
It is spreading rapidly in irrigation systems, reservoirs, highways, and beside roads.
Farmer organisations say that in reservoirs and canals in the Kandy and Matale Districts, the plant is spreading fast, hindering inland fishing and cultivation.
The fishing grounds in Naula, Bowatenna Reservoir, Amban River, Nalanda Reservoir are among those affected.
Wildlife organisations claim the plant is spreading to the surrounding areas.
The Naula farmers’ association, which supplies the largest daily vegetable crop to the Matale District, says that the spread of the plant has affected their cultivation as well.
A Dumbara environmental organisation says direct government intervention is needed.
The plant has also severely impacted the lives of ordinary people in the Central Province.
