Independence ceremony a nod to resilience

Sri Lankans will mark the 78th National Independence Day on Wednesday, February 4, under the theme ‘Let’s Build Sri Lanka’ in the
aftermath of the Cyclone Ditwah natural disaster, which crippled the nation last November.

Celebrations at Independence Square have been described as low cost.

The ceremony at Independence Square is expected to begin at 8 am under the patronage of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake with the participation of the tri-forces, the National Cadet Corps (NCC), the Police, and the Civil Defence Force.

As a prelude, a Pirith ceremony will be held tomorrow at Independence Square.

Public Administration Ministry Secretary Aloka Bandara said Rs 69 million was spent for last year’s Independence Day. This year too, the expenses would be around the same amount.

The theme was chosen as “Godagamu Sri Lanka” (Let’s Build Sri Lanka) as it aligns with the NPP Government’s programme to rebuild the country following the cyclone damage.

Main arrangements are done by the Public Administration Ministry, in coordination with other ministries, including the Ministry of Defence, Public Security, and Ministry of Mass Media.

Instructions have been issued to provincial, district, and divisional secretaries and governors to pause all other events since celebrations are not only in Colombo alone.

Municipal and urban councils have been asked to participate and organise community programmes, including the planting of trees within the week as well.
