Seaspan Corporation Pte. Ltd., the world’s largest independent containership charter owner and operator, together with Ceyline Shipping Limited, Sri Lanka’s leading Seafarer Recruitment & Placement Services provider, is celebrating 20 years of a partnership that has significantly strengthened Sri Lanka’s maritime reputation worldwide. Formed in 2005, the collaboration began with the deployment of Sri Lankan officers on the vessel Dubai Express and has since evolved into a model of maritime talent development.

Today, more than 630 Sri Lankan seafarers serve onboard Seaspan’s fleet of over 241 vessels, supported by a broader pool of more than 1,100 trained professionals. The partnership has achieved exceptional milestones, including an impressive 95% retention rate—one of the highest in the industry—and the successful full manning of 31 vessels by Sri Lankan ratings between 2023 and 2024. This includes seven advanced dual-fuel IGF vessels, demonstrating the capability and expertise cultivated through the collaboration.

A significant pillar of this success is the dedicated Seaspan Training Room in Sri Lanka, a unique regional facility that delivers world-class training for both Sri Lankan and international crew members operating within Seaspan’s global network. This center has played a vital role in elevating professional standards and enhancing technical competencies.

Seaspan COO Torsten Holst Pedersen emphasized that the partnership represents operational excellence built on people-centric development, highlighting the professionalism and high training standards of Sri Lankan seafarers. Ceyline Shipping COO Capt. SBS Lakmal noted that the two-decade-long collaboration has transformed Sri Lanka’s maritime workforce, helping cadets progress to senior ranks while strengthening the country’s global reputation as a reliable source of skilled maritime talent. Their joint efforts have also extended to CSR initiatives that benefit communities across Sri Lanka, reinforcing the partnership’s long-lasting national impact.
