Over 140 schools will not be reopened on December 16 due to damages caused by the recent cyclone.

147 such schools have been identified, Deputy Minister Madhura Senevirathna said.

Most of the affected schools are in the Central Province while some are in the Uva and North Western Provinces.

The deputy minister said some schools are also being used to shelter those displaced in the disaster and these too will remain closed till alternate places are found.

Damaged or destroyed schools will either be rebuilt or relocated depending on the advice of the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO), he said.

“A decision will be made once we get the full assessment report,” he said.

He also said children affected by the disaster will be given vouchers of Rs 25,000 for their education needs.

The government will also go ahead with the education reforms beginning next year despite the hindrances caused by the cyclone, he added.
