Ministry issues circular on school reopening

The Ministry of Education, Higher education and Vocational education has issued a circular announcing the re-opening dates of state, state-approved private schools and pirivena.

According to the circular, the second stage of the third term would commence with the re-opening of schools on December 16.

However, Cyclone Ditwah damaged 147 schools in the Central, Uva and North Western Provinces to the point they could not be opened on December 16.

All schools which are due to be opened on the 16th are required to be cleaned before December 15th by coordinating with relevant parties.

The school administration should take necessary measures to remove trees and tree branches which pose danger, and buildings and walls and roofs which could collapse. Schools should be disinfected, and fumigated for mosquitos.

The school administration should also ensure sanitary facilities and provide clean water facilities for students.

The circular had also called on the academic and non-academic staff to report to schools on December 15, and ensure that the school is in a position to be opened for students. Meanwhile, both academic and non-academic staff of the schools which could not be opened should report to the education zonal office nearest to their residence and mark their attendance. The relevant zonal education directors should temporally assign these teachers to schools according to requirements.

The second stage of third term for Sinhala and Tamil schools will commence on Tuesday, December 16 and study activities would be carried until December 22. (Christmas holidays would be from 23 December to 28).

The third stage of the third term would extend only from Monday December 29 to Wednesday December 31, 2025

The Muslim schools third term would commence from December 16 to Friday January 02, 2025 including Saturday December 27, 2025.
