The student societies of the University of Colombo launched a joint relief initiative aimed at providing practical assistance to families affected by Cyclone ‘Ditwah’.

“Supporting our communities’ recovery is crucial during this time of dire need, as the severe floods displaced thousands, interrupted schooling in several districts, and left many communities facing an acute shortage of basic supplies,” the university said.

The first stage of the initiative took place last week at the Student Service Centre, where volunteers focused on gathering dry rations and emergency essentials for households that had lost access to daily necessities.

The collection drive brought together a wide range of student groups: BEEZ, AIESEC Colombo Central, BOTSOC, SAIFA, Department of Statistics, the Rotaract and Leo Clubs, Physics and Astronomical Societies, the Science Society, Gavel Club, UOC Venturers, the Students’ Computer Lounge & Library and the FOS Media, all contributing to make this initiative a reality. Their combined efforts ensured that the contributions were sorted efficiently and delivered to flood-stricken areas through coordination with the Air Force Camp at Ratmalana.

The second stage focused on the nation’s future and the schoolchildren in the affected districts.

Last Monday, essential school supplies were distributed, ensuring that their education would not be disrupted by the unexpected natural disaster.

“Throughout both stages, Saviya demonstrated the unwavering commitment of the University’s undergraduates to stand with communities beyond their borders,” the university added.
