ChildFund Sri Lanka Mobilizes Emergency Response as Catastrophic Floods Displace Over 1.1 Million
View(s):Sri Lanka is facing one of its worst flood disasters in recent history, with over 1.1 million people displaced and sheltering in more than 1,500 safety centres. The catastrophe has resulted in 639 deaths and 206 missing persons, while widespread destruction continues across multiple districts.
ChildFund Sri Lanka has launched an extensive emergency response, confirming the safety of 8,232 children in its programmes. Assessments reveal that 3,852 children have been directly affected, 440 displaced, and 2,452 remain unreachable due to washed-out roads, destroyed infrastructure, and prolonged telecommunications outages that have isolated entire communities.
In Phase 1 of its response, the organisation has allocated LKR 15 million to immediate humanitarian needs across five priority districts. Interventions focus on child protection, psychosocial support, continuity of education, distribution of child-sensitive non-food items, food security, and safe drinking water and WASH assistance.
Child protection risks are rising in overcrowded shelters, where many children are showing signs of trauma, said Aditi Ghosh, Country Director of ChildFund Sri Lanka. Despite major access challenges, teams continue to coordinate closely with government agencies, UN bodies, and INGOs.
ChildFund urgently seeks additional support to expand psychosocial services, education materials, hygiene kits, nutritional aid, and water purification systems. Donors and partners can contact
