Diplomacy and World Affairs: An Unforgettable Journey with the BIDTI
View(s):From negotiating peace deals to tackling global challenges, the practice of diplomacy plays a crucial role in today’s world. Moreover, diplomatic skills have become highly valuable to professions across the spectrum due to the increased globalisation of every aspect of our lives.
It is in this context that the Bandaranaike International Diplomatic Training Institute (BIDTI), the diplomatic training institute of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs – offers its unique Diploma course in Diplomacy and World Affairs.

My exposure to Public International Law and International Mooting during my undergraduate studies, and the love for adventures as a President’s Scout intrigued and encouraged me to pursue this course. Thereby, I joined the XXVIth Diploma batch of the BIDTI after completing my Law degree in 2022.
Lectures conducted by the BIDTI ranged from fundamental topics such as origin of diplomacy to problematic global issues. Therefore, this broad curriculum allowed the participants to experience the diverse nature of diplomacy, and to appreciate the wide range of knowledge and skills required for its conduct.
One of the most remarkable features of the course was its distinguished panel of lecturers who are professionals in the area of study. Therefore, this academic culture of the BIDTI made its lectures interesting and highly sought after by the participants.
In this same tradition, the assessments of the BIDTI were not limited to traditional written examinations but involved a number of practical simulations ranging from negotiating bilateral treaties to engaging in media interviews. These simulations were assessed by experienced professionals, allowing the participants to gain valuable advice and tips on improving themselves.
I was also fortunate to associate a diverse and talented set of students in our batch including undergraduates, doctors, military officers, public/private sector officials and diplomats. This opportunity allowed us to make the learning experience truly unique and enriching.
The Director General of BIDTI and its dedicated staff fostered a student-friendly environment while maintaining highest academic and disciplinary standards throughout the course. They were constantly reviewing the progress of lectures, student engagement and emerging trends to improve the quality of the course. Further, in addition to the regular lectures, the BIDTI organised special guest lectures to supplement the general studies of the participants.
The academic intrigue instilled in us by the BIDTI made us more passionate about diplomacy and by the end of the course, it strengthened us to read and interpret world affairs from different perspectives than before. It also encouraged us to appreciate Sri Lanka’s geopolitical potentials and realities with a revitalised enthusiasm.
This Diploma is also the exclusive gateway to pursue the BIDTI’s “Post Graduate Diploma in Diplomacy and World Affairs course”, which is a research-based qualification undertaken by graduate students upon completing the Diploma successfully. I too had the opportunity of successfully completing the PGD in 2024, during which I conducted my research on “Extradition and Diplomacy”.
Therefore, in essence, this Diploma course offers an excellent foundation for anyone who is passionate about diplomacy, world affairs, and geopolitics, and they may truly enjoy and benefit from this course.
