State university courses to be re-evaluated: Deputy Minister

View(s):

Courses offered by state universities, including external degrees, will be revamped, with some scrapped and new ones introduced, to ensure that students take up courses that are in demand and make them employable, Deputy Minister of Higher Education Madura Seneviratne said.

External degrees in particular, he said, were offering subjects that were obsolete, and a large number of unemployed graduates were those who had followed such courses.

This was discussed at the subcommittee on higher education meeting held this week.

Standards of domestic degree courses should be on par with foreign degree courses and they should be recognised in any country in the world, he said.

Issues relating to accreditation of degree courses not falling under the purview of the University Grants Commission, was also discussed. Measures will be taken to address these issues, he said.

Secretary to the ministry and other officials, vice chancellors of state universities, faculty members of the Sri Lanka Bhikkhu University and faculty members of the Sri Lanka Buddhist Pali University were present at the meeting.

Other issues discussed were improving facilities for students with disabilities in universities and establishment of an accreditation board for the higher education system.

The subcommittee recommended that a comprehensive study be conducted by the UGC on foreign degree courses, the deputy minister said.

He also said that there will be a review of the number of approved teaching and non-teaching posts in universities, and vacancies filled promptly.

A cadre revision will be conducted of the number of approved teaching and non-teaching posts in universities with the participation of the Ministry of Education.

Primary health care units will be set up in universities in collaboration with the Ministry of Health. (DWI)
