The Institute of Chemistry Ceylon (IChemC) marked a significant cultural celebration on September 22, 2025, with the hosting of Navarathri Vizha at the College of Chemical Sciences. The event, held in conjunction with the Navaratri festival, blended tradition, spirituality, and community in a vibrant atmosphere.
Navaratri, one of the most revered festivals in Hindu tradition, symbolises the triumph of good over evil and the victory of light over darkness. Celebrated over nine nights and ten days, the festival is dedicated to worshipping the divine feminine in her various forms, embodying strength, wisdom, and prosperity. It is a time when communities gather to honour age-old traditions, to renew their spiritual connection, and to celebrate cultural artistry through music, dance, and devotion.
The evening commenced with a religious pooja honouring Goddess Durga, Lakshmi, and Saraswati, followed by a welcome address delivered by Yeshani Amritha.
A Semi-classical dance performance, presented by talented students, brought poise and richness to the proceedings, while a brief sermon by the officiating priest highlighted the spiritual significance of Navaratri. The programme further featured a captivating Carnatic musical recital, after which Prof. Chandani Perera delivered a keynote address, reflecting on the enduring values of culture, faith, and unity.
Guests were later treated with Cinema dance enlivened the evening, before the event concluded with a formal vote of thanks. The celebration also showcased the Institute’s attention to tradition and hospitality, with the venue adorned in colourful decorations and guests served with Pongal, vadai, kadalai, and almond milk.
The 2025 Navarathri Vizha was not only a cultural festivity but also a reaffirmation of spiritual renewal and shared heritage. For the Institute of Chemistry Ceylon, it stood out as a memorable occasion that brought together devotion, artistry, and community spirit.
