Three indicted over bomb at All Saints’ Church

The Attorney General has indicted three accused including a retired doctor on charges of attempting to explode a bomb at All Saints’ Church, Borella.
Liyanage Dayananda, Dr H D Shirley Felician Herath and K A Ruwansiri Hemantha have been indicted under the Offensive Weapons Act.
The accused have been indicted on two counts. These are that the accused had conspired to set off a bomb at the All Saints’ Church, Borella between July 12, 2021 and January 11, 2022 and of attempting to bomb the said church on January 11, 2022.
The prosecution is to produce 31 witnesses and 7 court products during the trial.
Earlier, the Supreme Court had refused to grant leave to proceed in a fundamental rights petition filed by the second accused, Dr Herath, stating that he had been arrested and held illegally.
In his petition, Dr Herath had claimed he had been denied access to a lawyer while in custody.
When the case was taken up before a three-judge Supreme Court bench comprising Justices S Thurairaja, Kumudini Wickremasinghe and Mahinda Samayawardhena, Additional Solicitor General Dileepa Peiris, who appeared for the Attorney General, told court that the petitioner had confessed to the crime.
After considering facts presented by both sides, the SC refused to grant leave to proceed and dismissed the petition.
