A six-foot Samadhi Buddha statue carved from a massive white rock formation was ceremonially installed at Rangiri Dambulla National School grounds on June 6, in honour of retired Sub-Inspector of Police and teacher, Sunil Wijesinghe.
The tribute was organised by members of the Dambulla Water Sports and Lifesaving Association, once trained by Mr. Wijesinghe. Mr. Wijesinghe, who served as a Sub-Inspector of Police, is credited with saving 70 individuals from drowning during his career and training nearly 2,000 lifeguards across the island.

The white stone used to create the statue was discovered buried underground in the Dewahuwa area in Galewela and then handed over to veteran stone craftsman W.H. Gamini Selton Jayawira of Mandalapola, Kurunegala, assisted by Mr. Dewa. The statue is now placed on the school grounds and is expected to be officially handed over to students on the upcoming Esala Poya day.
