A project to move the Matara Prison to Kotawila will be expedited, Justice Minister Harshana Nanayakkara said yesterday. The minister and officials visited the Matara prison to look into its requirements.

The minister noted that the insufficient space within the prison was causing inconvenience to prison officials and inmates, and therefore discussions were held to move the prison to Kotawila, about 10 km away from the town. Mr Nanayakkara noted that the courts complex too has been built in Kotawila and land has been reserved for the construction of a new prison.

He said the current location of the prison had historic value, and it could be put to better use. Industries Minister Sunil Handunnetti, Matara Mayor Jayantha Pathirana, Prisons Superintendent Mangala Welivitiya and ministry officials took part in the discussions.
