Sign language will soon be granted the status of a recognised language in Sri Lanka, following a Cabinet proposal approved this week.

The approval came 15 years after the Cabinet in 2010 granted policy approval to accept sign language as a formal way of communication.

The Legal Draftsman has been directed to prepare a draft bill recognising sign language as a communication medium, incorporating Cabinet decisions taken on September 12, 2017, and January 18, 2021.

The Cabinet proposal was submitted by the Minister of Rural Development, Social Security and Community Empowerment.
