A group of policemen from the Thoduwawa Police in Puttalam have been praised by villagers and the Civil Defence Committee for rejecting bribes offered by drug trafficking suspects and instead arresting them.
The policemen were treated to milk rice and sweet meats.
A police patrol on duty on May 22 had noticed two people in the night in a three-wheeler parked in an isolated location. A bag of currency notes was found on them. In turn, the two men had offered Rs 500,000 each to the two policemen for their release. However, the police team had alerted their senior officers and got them down to the scene.

The suspects were in possession of Rs 10.8 million, and the money was for a drug trafficking deal as transport charges via a fishing boat which was due in the country.
Eight suspects, including two women, were arrested.
The OIC, T.M.L. Ranaweera, said it was a rare occasion where the policemen were being praised and that it was the good rapport between the police and public that helped to resolve crime.
Civil Defence Committee Treasurer Princely Nanayakkara said the two policemen had performed their duties well by rejecting the money offered.
