This year’s national Poson festival commenced on the afternoon of June 6 (Friday) with Poson Sati Pirith ceremony. This significant event took place in front of the Sri Maha Bodhi at the Mahamevunawe in Anuradhapura, one of Sri Lanka’s ancient and sacred cities.

The event is organised annually by the Nuwaragam Palatha Central Divisional Secretariat and the Sati Pirith Committee to bless the people and promote peace for both the people and the government. The procession, known as the Pan Perahera, features water pots filled with pure water sourced from the Thisa wewa in Anuradhapura. It begins at the Isurumuni Rajamaha Viharaya and concludes at the Parithrana Mandapa near the Sri Maha Bodhi, following the performance of various Buddhist rituals.

This year’s Pan Perahera took place on the evening of the 6th, under the leadership of Ranjith Wimalasuriya, the Anuradhapura District Secretary and Government Agent. That night, Dr. Pallegama Hemarathana Thero, the Atamasthanadhipathi Nuwarakalaviya maha Sanghanayake, commenced the Pirith sermon as guided by the maha Sanghanayake.

The Sati Pirith series of offerings will continue until the 13th. On that day, a dorakada asna sermon will be held at night, and the following day, the Sati Pirith will conclude with an afternoon almsgiving to the Maha Sangha. This was stated by H. M. P. B. Munasinghe, the Secretary of the Offering Committee.

Dansal symbolises the values of generosity and kindness. It represents the Buddhist principle of Dana, which highlights selfless generosity and the importance of helping others without expecting anything in return. By encouraging acts of kindness, Dansal promotes unity and compassion, bringing people together. Considering the poson day, it is reported that 4,622 dansals have registered to participate. To promote safety and adherence to health guidelines, Public Health Inspectors (PHIs) will conduct random spot checks throughout.
