Parade of high-profile cases this week as CIABOC launches fresh probes

A string of cases against former ministers, politicians and ex-officials came up this week in courts, with some of them being indicted, while the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) also has begun a series of investigations.

Some of the highlights of the cases and investigations in progress are as follows:

Former Minister Keheliya Rambukwella and his son Ramitha Rambukwella: They were produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate Thanuja Lakmali over allegations of causing a loss of Rs eight million to the state by obtaining payments for salaries and allowances under the names of 12 staff members. They were released on bail.

Former Minister Rajitha Senaratne: Colombo High Court judge this week granted permission to the CIABOC to amend the indictment on Dr Senaratne in the case where he is charged with causing a loss to the state by leasing the Modara fisheries harbour.

Former Minister Chandrani Bandara: She was indicted in the Colombo High Court following charges filed by the CIABOC over the appointment of a project director in the Ministry of Dry Zone Development bypassing proper legal procedures. She was granted bail.

Former Minister Mervyn Silva : He was further remanded over allegations of acquiring state land with forged documents. He was also indicted in the Colombo High Court on charges of possessing assets beyond his earnings.

Former Minister Prasanna Ranatunga: The Court of Appeal will take up for hearing on June 16 an appeal filed against the previous sentence of a jail term and fine after being convicted in a case involving a demand for Rs. 64 million from a businessman to facilitate the development of a plot of land in the Meethotamulla area during his tenure as Chief Minister of the Western Province.

Former Minister Jhonston Fernando: He is accused of making use of Sathosa employees for political activities, thereby causing a loss to the state. Further hearing has been fixed for July 7.

Former Minister Ravi Karunanayake: The Supreme Court has dismissed an appeal filed by former Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake in relation to a bribery case involving the payment of rent for a luxury apartment by Arjun Aloysius.

Former Minister Piyasena Gamage : He was questioned by the CIABOC this week over allegations of unlawful appointments granted during his period as a minister.

Former State Minister Sasheendra Rajapaksa: He was questioned by the CIABOC for nearly seven and a half hours in connection with its investigation into financial losses caused to the government by importing substandard organic fertiliser from a Chinese company.
