Cavaliers on the field again

Former cricketing greats of Sri Lanka can be seen in action on the first weekend of October when Lanka Cavaliers stage their second annual Twenty20 cricket tournament for the Over-40 cricketers.
The invitational tournament which promises a gathering a former cricketing greats will be played on October 1 and 2 at the BRC and Colts grounds in Havelock Town. The organizers generally invite eight teams that will feature most of seniors and veterans of the game who play in an only Twenty20 tournament reserved for them.

“During our days the shortest version of cricket was the one day games. Today times have changed and there is a lot cricket can gain from the entertaining version of the game. It will be enjoyable to play in a tournament as such where we could also share the camaraderie with our former friends and foes on the field,” said the general secretary of Lanka Cavaliers, Upali Warnapura.

Last year’s champions Kurunegala XI will defend their title this year against seven other teams which also include the finalist of 2010, the Umpires XI. Other teams that will be featured in the Lanka Cavaliers T20 tournament are Colts Taverners, Mercantile Cricket Association XI, Combined Saints XI, Moratuwa XI, Old Peterites and Henry Steele Olcott XI. The tournament will be played on a knockout basis with four games being scheduled on the first day, October 1. The second day will proceed with the semifinals in the morning at both venues while the final is scheduled to be played at Colts ground from 2.00pm onwards.

The tournament is organized by the pioneer veterans’ cricket club in Sri Lanka, the Lanka Cavaliers which was formed in 1997 by a set of cricketers who played the game during the 1970s to late 1980s. The club includes Sri Lanka’s first Test captain Bandula Warnapura and former cricketers Jayantha Seneviratne, Basil Perera, Upali Warnapura, Damien Fernando, and Daya Sirisena. The tournament is sponsored by Softlogic.
