Police stars for mass impersonation plan?

By L.B.Senaratne

A Tamil Nadu citizen arrested in Kandy with 1,400 Police shoulder strap chromium plated stars in his possession is being questioned to ascertain whether they were meant to be used in any subversive activity, especially with the annual Esala Perahera scheduled to begin at the end of July.

The suspect identified as Panchipan Padam Baskeran has been served with detention orders and is now being interrogated. He is said to be a resident of Nagapatam in Tamil Nadu and had reportedly come to Sri Lanka on a mission to paint kovil statues.

According to police, he had come to Sri Lanka around one and half months ago and had the police stars given to him in India to be handed over to a person who had however not turned up. As he had work in Kandy he had come there with the stars still in his possession.
