Maddumagama Vithanage Anura Shantha (53) -a father of three- and resident of Albion Lane, Dematagoda was electracuted on Friday (29) night while attempting to fix an electric short circuit in a community water tank. Dedduwa Jayalalitha Malini (57) the wife of the victims said that though her husband was a three-wheeler driver by profession, he was adept at fixing electrical problems.

As such she said, when an electricity leak had occurred at the community water tank four days ago and the electricity department had not paid heed to their complaints he had attempted to fix the leak himself. According to Anura Jagath Jayasinghe who had accompanied the victim while he attempted to repair the leak, both of them had got into the tank and Anura had fixed the short circuit. Unfortunately the victim had got into the tank a second time, this time alone. He had received an electric shock which caused him to collapse inside the 8’ by 6’ tank.

Despite being given first aid and rushed to the National Hospital, the victim had passed away at around 10.30 pm. JMO Colombo National Hospital H.D.S.C. Appuhamy said death was caused by heart failure brought on by electrocution. Inquirer into Sudden Deaths Ashroff Rumi declared there was no cause for suspicion as it had been an accident. Police constable K.S. Karunaratne led the evidence and helped in the post mortem inquiry.
