Finance Ministry transactions including the awarding of tenders, loans and grants would be made available to the public soon, to ensure transparency, Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayaka said.

He said two separate sections would be set up in the Ministry– one for the general public and the other for Members of Parliament — to obtain this information.

Mr. Karunanayake said the project was being carried out with a Rs 120 million loan from the Asian Development Bank.

“We were initially planning to launch this project next year, but instead we have decided to advance it. There have been allegations earlier about frauds in contracts and tenders. This move would preclude such allegations,” he said.

Mr. Karunanayake said the ministry would begin the project before the Right to Information Bill was passed, adding that other ministries too should follow a similar system.

He said a web site comprising information on tenders and transactions would also be launched in September. The information on the site would however be limited.

He said this was the first time the Finance Ministry was going public with information on transactions.
