The Market Research Society of Sri Lanka (MRSSL) conducted a half day workshop recently for over 100 professionals belonging to the data collection departments of market research agencies.

The event received an overwhelming response from the audience, which comprised personnel drawn from almost all the leading market research agencies, as well as personnel from different grades – from field enumerators to seasoned field executives from across the country, the association said.

Participants were trained on many general topics like the basics of Market Research, Do’s and Don’ts of Data Collection, as well as introduced to specific topics like sampling, questionnaire administration etc. by the course coordinator Neel De Silva, one of the executive council members of MRSSL.

Inaugurating the event, MRSSL President Ravi Bamunusinghe introduced the newly formed society and emphasized that some of the key ambitions of MRSSL in the context of data collection, and taking the right steps is to inspire more confidence on data quality. He re-iterated the main objective of the society to bring about a formal common platform to bring all key stakeholders of the industry together, and work towards the progress of the market research industry, and the role data collectors play in that context.

The Data Collection department is one of the most important departments for any market research agency. It is estimated that at any point in time, there might be over a 1000 enumerators out on the streets or on the phone having thousands of conversations with customers on a daily basis. Often working as free-lancers on a project to project basis, their training and development needs are mostly met by each market research agency they work for.

“I have been in the (MR) industry for 10 years, and it is for the first time I have attended an event of this nature,” said one participant. “It is great to see that there is a body to uplift image of market research and field work (in particular),” said another.

Several senior Data Collection Executives present at the event welcomed this initiative from MRSSL and lauded its efforts in uniting the data collection departments.

Closing the event, Himalee Madurasinghe, Secretary of MRSSL and Country Representative for ESOMAR, pointed out that according to the latest ESOMAR Global Review, Sri Lanka is among the top 10 fastest growing research markets in Asia Pacific and how the MR industry is gaining increased acceptance and momentum.
