A lawyers’ meeting in Galle ended in blows, and one lawyer was taken to the Karapitiya Hospital with head and eye injuries. The attack took place after an argument about electing new office bearers to the Sri Lanka Freedom Party Lawyers Association of Galle.

The injured lawyer, Thushara de Silva, told the Sunday Times that the meeting was interrupted by arguments and that four persons attacked him soon after the meeting. One of the men, according to Mr. de Silva, was Srimal Wijesekara, secretary of the SLFP lawyers’ association. Mr. Wijesekara denies the allegation.

Mr. de Silva alleged that Mr Wijesekara had said he would not allow him to contest the next Provincial elections. Earlier, there was an argument over the impeachment of former Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake. Mr. de Silva had opposed the impeachment.

Galle Police spokesman E. M. H. B. Siriwardena confirmed that there had been an assault incident at the Friday meeting and that an injured lawyer was admitted to hospital.
