Plan to recruit Indian labourers stopped

Due to security issues, the Agriculture Ministry has put off the decision to introduce extended work visas for Indian labourers to work in paddy fields in the North and East.
“There were plans to bring down Indians as there is a severe shortage of harvesting machine operators in the North and East but due to security issues it was decided to train the youth in the area to operate these machines,” Agriculture Ministry Mahinda Yapa Abeywardena said.

Last week that Mr. Abeywardena told the Sunday Times that Indian nationals would be granted work visas to harvest paddy in the North and East due to the labour shortage.
Sources at the Ministry of Agriculture said yesterday the change of plans came after last week’s Sunday Times report.
