33 of 46 Lankan missions headed by political appointees

Sri Lankans mission overseas are inundated with political appointees with 33 of the 46 High Commissions and embassies abroad headed by non-career personnel, according to documents tabled in Parliament recently. Missions in some of the most important capitals such as Washington, Moscow, Berlin, The Hague, Ankara, Canberra, Tokyo, Manila, Seoul, and Jakarta are headed by political appointees.

Sixty eight people who are outside the public service are working in Sri Lankan missions – with 33 as Heads of Missions. Another 304 who are in public service but not from the Foreign Service have been recruited to the missions. While some are drawn from the Departments of Commerce and Labour and the Ministries of Foreign Employment and Defence, 205 among them have been recruited from the Management Assistant Service.

Sri Lanka has diplomatic missions in 45 countries in addition to which there is the Permanent Representative to the United Nations Mission in New York as well as Consul General Offices in several important cities.The details regarding these appointments were tabled in Parliament by Deputy External Affairs Minister Neomal Perera in response to a question raised by UNP MP Anoma Gamage.
