An evening of Bharata Natyam by Thivya Sivanesan

The Indian Cultural Centre, Colombo will present a Bharata Natyam dance programme “Natha Chalitham” by Thivya Sivanesan on Wednesday, December 12 at 6 p.m. at the ICC auditorium.

Thivya Sivanesan, a disciple of Prof C.V. Chandrasekhar (Chennai) has completed her teacher’s grade dance and mirunthanga exam with distinction. She was awarded the Bharatha Kalavithagar and Miruthanga Kalavithagar by the North Ceylon Oriental Music Society.

She has performed in major venues all over Sri Lanka, and at dance festivals in Norway and India through Arusri Art Theatre. A talented teacher, versatile dancer and choreographer Thivya runs her own dance school Abhinayakshetra School of Dance in Colombo. She has a special interest in Tamil poems. Admission is free on a first come first served basis.

The National Council of YMMAs  receive government grant

The National Council of YMMAs of Sri Lanka (Inc.), an approved charity has been allocated a government grant of Rs. 700,000 on the recommendation of  Al-Haj. A.H.M. Azwer, to set up a Computer Centre at the Maligawatte YMMA Premises.  The picture shows Mr.  Azwer. MP handing over the documents to the YMMA officials Haji SBC Thassim, JP, Patron, Haji M. The hope of Christmas

Don’t miss an evening of fun with ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’

The young students taking part in the British Council drama workshops will present a stage play, based on Roald Dahl’s popular story “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ today, December 9 at the Defence Services auditorium at 6 p.m. This event is in partnership with Ceylon Cold Stores (Plc).

The drama workshop was launched on October 1 as a part of their World Children’s Day 2012 celebrations. A group of 40 talented children, between 10 years to 15 years have been taking part in the workshops under the guidance of Anabella Brochard, a teacher at the British Council.

Twenty of the children are from the Defence Services College in Colombo 2, a school exclusively dedicated to the children of the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Police personnel, while the others are members of the Young Learners’ Centre at the British Council Library.

 SLAAS annual sessions venue change 

The venue for the annual sessions 2012 of the Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science (SLAAS) has been changed from the University of Jaffna to locations in Colombo due to unavoidable circumstances.

The session inauguration and the theme seminar titled ‘Science for sustainable development and prosperity’ will be held on December 10 at the auditorium of the Ministry of Disaster Management, Vidya Mawatha, Colombo 7 and the annual dinner on December 11 at SLAAS Headquarters, Vidya Mawatha, Colombo 7.

Meanwhile, the School Inventors’ Exhibition on December 11 and 12; the Oral and Poster Presentations on December 11 and 12; the Sectional Business Meetings on December 11 at 10 a.m.; and the Annual General Meeting on December 12 at 3.15 p.m. (Chemistry Lecture Theatre) will all be held at the Faculty of Science, University of Colombo, Colombo 3.

Please help child with hearing loss

Nearly-two Senehas Randilu is suffering from bilateral severe/profound hearing loss with poor speech development and as the Behind the Ear (BTE) hearing aid has been unsatisfactory, needs to undergo cochlear implant surgery which will cost about Rs. 3.2 million.

Her family which is in dire straits requests kind donors to lend a helping hand to ensure a better future for Senehas Randilu. Isipathana OBA ’87 class get together
