“We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.” The time has come yet again for us to open up our generous hearts and to reach out with our helping hands. The young boys of Parakrama Child Development Centre, a home for boys 50 years calls for your help and donations.

The home which is run by the Mallika Homes Society was established in 1954 on a five acre plot of land donated by Ernest De Silva and has since been taking care of young orphaned boys. The orphanage which is currently home to 33 young boys between the ages of 5-18 has organised a jumble sale in order to raise funds for the maintenance of the building.

The jumble sale will be held on December 16 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Parakrama Child Development Centre, Linton Road, Aniyakanda, Kandana and will have food, drinks, and household items for sale. The boys at the orphanage will have a stall of their own where they will be selling unique and beautiful handmade items created by them. There will also be a Homerun pas stall selling their products at wholesale prices, silk batiks by Imara Yanagala, and a Singer microwave demonstration at 11 a.m. conducted by Sujeewa Witharana.

Youngsters can take part in an art competition organised and sponsored by Homerun pas and the winners will be awarded gifts and certificates. The competition will begin at 1 p.m. and is open to all children between the ages of 5-18. Live performances by a guest band and also by some of the musically talented boys at the orphanage will add to the excitement of the event.

Besides the contributions that you will be able to make at the jumble sale, the secretary of the Child Development Centre Mrs. Suramya Jayasinghe also said that they would welcome donations of Sinhala, English and Tamil books for their library, cash, stationery and also help from volunteer teachers.

All donations and contributions will be used for the improving and upgrading of the buildings and the computer room of the orphanage, for repairing the lavatories, and for maintaining the home. Come join hands with these children and help to make their lives a better one.
