Art is and always has been a form of self-expression, a creative state of mind that many possess but few passionately pursue. Sujeewa Kumari, award-winning artist whose work is in the surrealist tradition has her latest exhibition at the Paradise Road Galleries, with 31 of her paintings, mostly done on paper and a few on canvas.

Sujeewa Kumari

Sujeewa who says that there is no difference or separation between art and life has been fascinated by it nearly all her life. Her earliest memories of art and creativity are when she was just a child of six or seven years of age and relate closely to her mother who, like Sujeewa had a passion for painting.

Even though Sujeewa’s mother never had the opportunity to pursue her dream it was she who helped and encouraged her daughter. As a young child Sujeewa was fascinated by her mother’s creations and attempted to experiment with the paint and brushes herself discovering her own love for it.

After her primary education in her hometown Bandarawala, Sujeewa went on to the Institute of Aesthetic Studies Colombo where she obtained a degree in fine arts. She also holds post graduate and masters degrees from the Netherlands and is now a visiting lecturer at the Kelaniya University.

Sujeewa combines many different techniques, materials and elements in her work, each created with a mixture of ink, water colours, acrylic paint, pencils and charcoal. Even though these mediums are quite different she loves creating the perfect combination by mixing and layering her work as she believes this creates greater room for freedom of expression.

Sujeewa’s style, in her words is somewhat based on the concepts of magic realism and surrealism; both European concepts. “Even though my art mainly portrays imaginary figures and appears rather dreamy they are based on realistic ideas and feelings,” she says.
