Six foot burley, Nipun ‘Gulliver’ Siriwardena led Royal College to cager glory when they won the All Island Under 19 ‘A’ division title defeating Colombo International School, Kandy by 65 points to 52 at Reid Avenue recently after a long wait of 12 years.

At the short whistle CIS, Kandy had a slender 30 to 29 point lead.

The tournament was conducted by the Sri Lanka Schools Basketball Association.

It was indeed a long wait and plenty of sweat, toil and tears that went into their victory and not forgetting the work put in by their dedicated coach Prasanna Jayasinghe who saw to it that the boys were in excellent form throughout the entire tournament.Julian Gunasinghe led the scoring for Royal with a top score of 16 points, while Sameera Chanaka 13 and skipper Nipun Siriwardena chipped in with 12.

For Colombo International School, Lahiru Karaliyadde was right on target with 24 points, while Umer Naleer 19 and Isfahan Ziard six were the other contributors.

Nipun Siriwardena and Sandeepa Ratnayake, both of Royal College were adjudged the best defensive and most valuable players of the tournament, while Umer Nalir of CIS, Kandy was the best offensive player. (BM)
