Minhath National School is the one and only Tamil medium school in the Dickwella Educational Zone in the Matara District which has produced several extraordinary personalities to the nation since its inception.

The Present Principal Mr.M.A.M.Mashair

This school was initiated in 1903 in a small hut under the leadership of Mr. Mohamed Kasim. After 15 years the school was acquired by the Government in 1918 and named as Dickwella Tamil Mixed School. Mr.K. Krishnapillai was appointed as the first principal of this government school. A magazine called “Tamil Nesan” was published during this period. As the years went by the attendance increased. It was under the former Principal Mr. A.H.S. Mohamed that the golden era of the school dawned which brought tremendous  developments to the school. Dudley Senanayake visited the school in 1949 and two students got through the Grade 5 Scholarship Exam for the first time in 1958.

Members of Staff

The school was promoted as a Maha Vidyalaya in 1961.With the amazing rise in the attendance of the school, the authorities were forced to move the school to larger premises. In 1963, Minhath M.V. was shifted to the present spacious premises and the Primary Section had to be shifted. In 2001 the authorities combined both the Primary and Secondary schools and named the school as Minhath National School. Presently the principal Mr.M.A.M. Mashair with the collaboration of the Vice Principal, teachers, SDC members, parents and old boys, are working hard to bring this school on par with the other well known colleges in Sri Lanka.

Board ofPrefects – Secondary Section

The fully equipped Computer Unit, the Science laboratory, and the Library has a remarkable influence on the development of the students.

Minhath National School started to enjoy its educational victories from 1949 onwards when two of their students got through the Grade 5 scholarship examination. Since then many triumphs have followed. This year M.M. Asjadh Ali, son of the present principal obtained the Provincial 1st rank (185 marks) in the Grade 5 scholarship examination, 2012. Along with him four others too got through with good scores. The G.C.E. (O/L) section has progressed from 36% to 86% which is a great success.

The Advanced Level, Arts and Commerce steams were started in 1963 and the Science stream in 1974. It has improved tremendously since its inception. M.N. Muhammed, M. Naleef, M.B.M. Matheen were the first three students to enter the university in 1965. Later N.M.I.Nazreen took the 1st rank in Commerce in the Dickwela Zone in 1991 and A.M.F. Asriya obtained 3’s for the first time in 2001. Now quite a number of students qualify to enter leading universities.

The Minhath administrators give prominence not only to curricular activities but also to the co-curricular and extracurricular activities too. The first inter-house sports meet was organised in 1972 and many new talents were found. Through sports Minhath has produced several sportsmen to the nation.
