Devinuwara National School is located in the historical city of Devinuwara. It belongs to the Devinuwara Educational division, in the Matara Education zone. This school has provided a whole lot of educated, intellectual and loyal citizens to the country during its 77 year history.

The College Crest

This school was started in 1934 in a small mud and thatched building with 4 teachers and 50 students. The first principal of this school was Mr. Edwin De Silva. On July 18. 1938, the school was shifted to a new premise in Welegoda, Devinuwara. And it was ceremonially opened by the Henry Steele Olcott. Later this school was established as a bilingual school.

The golden era of the school began after it was elevated to the level of a senior school. Soon after, it was elevated further to a National School in 2001 by Minister Mahinda Wijesekara, a well known student of this school.

Among the old students of Devinuwara National school, is a commissioner of Examination Mr. Arthur Wedamulla, former Commissioner of Elections Mr. Chandanada De Silva, former Secretary of the President of Sri Lanka, Mr. Kusumsiri Balapatabandige, former Deputy Inspector General of Police Mr. Gunasena Thenabadu, former Minister of Environment, Mr. Mahinda Wijesekara and Professor Dayananda Patabandi of the University of Ruhuna as their prized products.

Board of Prefects

At present there are nearly 1200 students in this school and the school staff consists of 72 teachers and 8 non academic staff members. The present Principal Mr. M.D. Gunasiri with his staff are doing their best to bring up this school in all activities.

There are classes from Grade One to Grade Thirteen and the students who are qualified at their G.C.E.(O/L) examination have the opportunity to follow the G.C.E. Advanced Level courses in Arts, Commerce, Science and Maths.

Devinuwara National School was among the first set of schools in the island to start English medium from Grade 6 to 11 under the National Amity Bilingual Education Programme of 2012. The special education unit in the primary section is valuable for students of the area who need special attention.

Board of Principals

There is a well equipped science laboratory, home science lab, agricultural unit and two libraries for both primary and the secondary sections. More over there are two computer labs with all the facilities for the students to learn information technology to compete in the modern world.

Science Laboratory

There are many talented students in this school who have succeeded in winning awards at Zonal and National level competitions. Devinuwara National school won fourth place at the National Drama competition in 2010, and also won second place at the senior Drama competition at the Zonal English Day in 2011.

Eastern Music Room

It is an important fact that some of the students of this school were able to reach the National Level competition at the Sinhala Day, The English Day and also at the Tamil Day competitions.

In addition there are many other extracurricular activities in the school such as Scouting, First Aid & Disaster Management t, the Stamp Society and the Counselling team to encourage the students to do well in every aspect. There are sports and games such as cricket, football, netball and many students have shown their talents in winning places at zonal level sports competitions.

Presently this school has launched a special qualitative programme for further development of the school with the dedication of the present principal Mr. M.D. Gunasiri and the staff.

College Environment

Yet they lack sufficient physical resources and the lack of an auditorium is an immediate need of the school. The Principal staff and the students of Devinuwara National School are doing a great deal to bring up this school to be one of the best schools in the Southern Province in the future.
