Uditha profiles Lankan consumer

The third edition of ‘Profiling the Sri Lankan Consumer’ by Dr. Uditha Liyanage, Director of the Postgraduate Institute of Management (PIM) was launched recently and is now available at the PIM.
The demographic changes that are taking place in Sri Lanka and their far-reaching implications for managers are first described in the book. Here, the increasing demand for particular product categories, rather than for others is the major fallout for business managers. The book then goes on to track economic patterns that are emerging.

The different, veritable “worlds” of the urban and rural; Urban and Western Province; and then the New Urban Middle Class (NUMC) and the general population of the Western Province are next laid bare. The emergence of new social groupings and their increasing influence on consumption is noteworthy.

The third edition is an update of some of the key statistics of the previous edition. Picture shows Dr. Uditha Liyanage handing over a copy of his book to Jayampathi Bandaranayake, immediate past Chairman of Ceylon Chamber of Commerce.
