A memorial service was held on Friday in the Hagili Ella area of Welimada with the participation of over 50 monks to pay homage to those who died in disasters including landslides caused by heavy rains in the last few days of November.
The festival was organized by the incumbent of the temple, Venerable Walpola Gotama Nayaka Thero.
The pilgrimage (Shramanabhi Sakmana) with the participation of 50 monks in the forest began on the 22nd from the Madanwela temple in Haguranketha. The monks then visited Padiyapellella, Walapane, Nildandaheena, Udupussallawa, and Welimada town, which were affected by the landslides.
Following an almsgiving held at the residence of Gamini Wijesiri, the Badulla Commissioner of the St. John’s Ambulance service in Welimada, the monks held a sermon on the Welimada-Badulla road, close to the place where the couple who died after a landslide collapsed on their house in Bhagili Ella on the Welimada-Badulla road.
