Anuradhapura Diocese welcomes new Bishop
View(s):The Catholic Diocese of Anuradhapura on Saturday installed Most Rev. Dr. Nishantha Sagara Jayamanne as the new Bishop.
The Episcopal Ordination took place at 9 a.m. yesterday at St. Joseph’s Cathedral, Anuradhapura, with clergy, religious and lay faithful in attendance. The ceremony formally entrusted him with the pastoral leadership of the Diocese.
Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith and Bishops from across the country attended the event.
The Roman Catholic Diocese of Anuradhapura, established on March 18, 1982, as the ninth diocese of the Catholic Church in Sri Lanka, comprises two districts and 15 parishes.
The discovery in 1912 of the Anuradhapura Cross, believed to date to the 5th or 6th century, stands as testimony to an early Christian presence on the island. It was within this historic and multi-religious landscape that the Church sought to serve not only Catholics but all communities, irrespective of difference.
The new Bishop, born on June 25, 1970, in Pamunugama, was educated at Roman Catholic Boys’ School, Bopitiya, and St. Benedict’s College, Kotahena. He was ordained a priest on May 13, 2000. Prior to his appointment, announced by the Holy See, he served as Director of the Blessed Sacrament Scholasticate in Ampitiya, Kandy.
