A public protest was held across the North and East of Batticaloa yesterday (Saturday 28) under the auspices of public organisations, demanding the repeal of the Prevention of Terrorism Act and the suspension of the Act to Protect the State from Terrorism, which is set to replace the Prevention of Terrorism Act.

The protest march began at the Batticaloa Stone Bridge and proceeded to Gandhi Park, where demonstrators gathered.

Religious leaders, Illankai Thamil Arasu Kachchi MPs and former MPs, local government council chairmen, deputy chairmen and members, the National Organiser of the Tamil National People’s Front, civil society representatives, relatives of the forcibly disappeared, public organisations, and members of the general public took part in the rally.

Slogans raised during the protest included “We don’t want both PTA and PSTA”, “We don’t want any laws that oppress the people”, “We don’t want old laws, we don’t want new ones – repeal PTA”, “We don’t want the Prevention of Terrorism Act; the existing criminal laws of this country are enough”, and “We don’t want any laws against human rights.”
