Easter suspects without lawyers make their own submissions
View(s):By Ranjith Padmasiri
Twenty-two of the 24 suspects facing the High Court trial-at-bar on allegations of conspiring and aiding and abetting to carry out the Easter Sunday attack have started making their own submissions after their lawyers withdrew. The lawyers withdrew, citing their inability to represent their clients due to the case being heard on daily basis in the morning and afternoon sessions.
The accused have been challenging their confessions, which are being made use of in the case against them, as the voir dire inquiries are underway to examine the admissibility of their confessions as evidence. The court has already decided that four of the statements have been made voluntarily. Attorney at Law Niroshan Siriwardena is appearing for two of the accused.
The Trial-at-Bar bench comprises Judges Nawaratna Marasinghe, Sujeewa Nissanka and Ramanathan Kanthan.
