Nugegoda Magistrate Ruwandika Marasinghe on Friday ordered that the suspects in the incident where the name of an adult website was included in the Grade 6 English module published under the new education reforms be arrested and produced in court.

When the case was taken up again, the Magistrate considered the investigation report submitted by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and inquired whether statements had been recorded from those responsible.

The CID, in a further report filed in court, stated that a thorough investigation needs to be conducted regarding the phones and computers belonging to those who had given instructions when compiling the modules, as well as the persons who had compiled it.

The CID also claimed that the name of the adult website had been included while following instructions from a now interdicted deputy director of the National Institute of Education (NIE), who had stressed that the modules should be compiled in a manner that enables children to easily understand the contents. They added that investigations were still being conducted to ascertain whether the website’s name had been included deliberately or under the influence of someone.

Maithri Gunaratne, PC, who appeared with Attorney-at-Law Kisal Senanayake for the President of the Association of Education Professionals, Ven Ulapane Sumangala Thero, accused the CID of attempting to sabotage its own investigation to let wrongdoers off the hook. He said no suspects had yet been produced in court while statements were yet to be recorded from those connected to the incident.

Attorney-at-Law Asha Kahawatta, who appeared for the Joint Principals’ Trade Union, told court that though the Education Ministry Secretary should be named a suspect in the case, it was deeply problematic that he is now a complainant in the investigation. She added that the CID is yet to record statements from instructors at NIE who had trained teachers on the modules in question.

After considering the submissions, the Magistrate postponed the case to April 24, ordering the CID to report progress made in the case on that date.
