Suspected Akuregoda gunman arrested
View(s):One of the two gunmen involved in the killing of a lawyer and his wife at Akuregoda last week was arrested yesterday, police said, announcing a major breakthrough.
The suspect was handed over to the Crime Division of the Western Province Southern Range last night. He is believed to be a former army soldier and the one who used a T56 assault rifle to fire at the lawyer and his wife.
Investigators also believe the driver who transported the gunmen to the scene has fled the country.
Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala told Parliament on Friday that the suspect who fired at the couple with a T-56 rifle was identified as Robert Suresh, a resident of Pansala Road, Meewala, Rukgahawila.
The shooting on February 13 left Attorney-at-Law Buddhika Mallawaarachchi and his wife dead in the parking lot of a supermarket in Akuregoda.
