Seven new high courts are to be set up in the Colombo region, with the majority being tasked with hearing criminal and corruption cases, a senior official said.
One of the high courts will be hearing civil appellate cases, while another will hear commercial cases.
The Judicial Service Commission (JSC), chaired by Chief Justice Preethi Padman Surasena, has taken the decision to set up these new high courts with the aim of minimising law’s delays, JSC Secretary Prasanna Alwis said.
He said five of the new courtrooms will be established at the currently under construction ‘Adhikarana Piyasa’ building in Aluthkade, in the section where the Supreme Court previously sat. Two more courtrooms will be set up at two former ministerial residences on Bauddhaloka Mawatha, Colombo 07.
The courts to be set up to hear criminal and corruption cases.
Mr Alwis said the seniority and merits would be taken into account in the appointment of the judges to the new courts.
The Justice Ministry is assigning staff to the new high courts.
Meanwhile, moves are underway to upgrade one of the seven District Courts in Kandy to hear civil appellate cases.
