Three housing units used as government quarters situated in the Samapura Grama Niladhari area in the Ampara Divisional Secretariat remain abandoned and claimed by trees and creepers.
The residents say that the housing units, situated within the Gurupura Paddy Marketing Board store complex, were maintained by the Food Commissioner’s Department for a long period, and were thereafter used as a governmental store, and are currently being used by the Paddy Marketing Board.

These quarters, equipped with all amenities, have not been inhabited for many years and consequently their doors and windows have decayed while the electricity and plumbing are out of order. The roof is damaged.
Even the protective fencing around the houses and the entrance have dilapidated, leaving the premises open to intruders.
The residents of the area surmise that the quarters have been neglected because the Food Commissioner’s Department does not have a branch office in Ampara.
The residents point out that the neglect is sad given there is a serious dearth of government quarters in this area- where there is a number of government institutions including the SLTB tire factory and the Divisional Postmaster’s Office. They called on authorities to renovate the quarters and put them to use before they
are misappropriated.
