CID sends documents in Saman Ekanayake case for analysis
View(s):The Criminal Investigation Department (CID), investigating the case on the visit of former President Ranil Wickremesinghe to the UK to attend a graduation ceremony at the University of Wolverhampton, has sent 9 documents used by former President’s Secretary Saman Ekanayake to the Government Examiner of Questioned Documents for analysis.
With the permission of the court, the CID has also forwarded a list of questions to the examiner to ascertain for what purposes the documents were used and whether they were indeed used by the suspect (Mr Ekanayake).
The documents include a printout of an email in which the visit in question had been referred to as a personal visit, where the word “personal” had been circled using a pen. The CID has sent handwriting samples Mr Ekanayake used during his official work to the examiner to compare with the documents.
Mr Ekanayake, who had been in remand custody after being arrested over the incident, was released on bail this week after being produced before Colombo Fort Magistrate Isuru Neththikumara.
Meanwhile, addressing the court after Mr Ekanayake was granted bail, Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Dileepa Peiris informed the court that action will be taken under the Assistance to and Protection of Victims of Crime and Witnesses Act, against those who behave in a manner that intimidates witnesses in this case, which involves the alleged misuse of Rs 16.6 million in public funds.
Mr Ekanayake was released on two surety bails amounting to Rs 20 million each. The court also lifted the overseas travel ban that had been imposed on Mr Ekanayake.
The ASG added that the University of Wolverhampton has still not responded to queries regarding the invitation letter that Mr Wickremesinghe claims to have received.
The magistrate ordered the complainant to file indictments in the high court against the suspects in this case before the next court date on April 29.
