The residents of Jayawickremapura in Udukawa, Weligama have been seriously inconvenienced due to a sewage treatment plant situated in a private property.

The plant had been running for many years in a private property in the Welipitiya divisional secretariat division. Residents of the area protested against the owners of the plant as it has become a public nuisance, causing environmental and health issues.

The residents with placards in hand barricaded the Weligama-Akuressa main road, obstructing traffic temporarily.

The Officer in Charge of the Weligama Police Station Sanath Kumara told the protesters there is no obstruction against a peaceful demonstration, but having a protest in a manner which obstructed a road is an act against the law. Thereafter the road was reopened for vehicle movement.

The police had informed the protestors that relevant authorities will be informed about the issue, after which the residents called off the protest.
