Weeks after NPP parliamentarian Asoka Ranwala was involved in a road accident, his spouse’s vehicle has been involved in an accident.
Police media spokesman F.U. Wootler said that when Dr Indrani Ranwala, wife of Mr Ranwala, was turning into her house on the Kelaniya–Biyagama Road, an oncoming vehicle collided with her vehicle.
Police said the other driver, a musician, was intoxicated. A breathalyser test confirmed he was above the legal alcohol limit.
The spokesman said the musician was returning from a party and lost control of the vehicle.
Meanwhile, when the case involving former Speaker Ranwala’s vehicle was heard at the Mahara Magistrate’s Court on Friday, the injured party demanded Rs 750,000 in compensation to settle the matter.
The police told Additional Magistrate Bandara Illangasinghe that they had received the Government Analyst’s report of the former speaker’s blood and urine samples obtained within 24 hours. According to the report, Mr Ranwala was not under the influence of liquor at the time of the crash.
The lawyers representing the aggrieved party disputed the claim.
Former speaker Ranwala was present at court during the hearing.
A police officer attached to the Sapugaskanda traffic branch testified that a mother, a small child and the child’s grandmother, all from the same family, were injured while travelling in the same car when the collision occurred.
Mr Ranwala’s lawyer said compensation could be discussed once medical reports of the injured were submitted. Sapugaskanda police told the court those reports had not yet been received. The magistrate ordered the case to be called again on March 13.
Meanwhile, D.U.P. Athukorala, husband of K.D. Pathma—who suffered a leg injury—told the Sunday Times he would petition the Human Rights Commission against Sapugaskanda police for failing to accept his complaint immediately after the incident.
