Maize farmers in Alikanda, Ampara, say an unidentified disease has severely damaged their crops this season, leaving them without a proper harvest and deeply in debt.
Nearly 500 acres, cultivated in previous years with good yields, have been affected, with farmers reporting stunted plants and poor cob formation.
They say drought at planting season followed by heavy rains, possible seed-related issues and pest attacks may have contributed to the losses.
Farmers, who say they have spent heavily on seed, fertiliser and labour while also battling wild animals, are appealing to the president and authorities for compensation similar to that provided for other disaster-affected crops.
Ampara District Director of Agriculture Thusara Perera said investigations are under way and that seed quality and weather conditions are among the possible causes. He added that compensation depends on crop insurance registration, but steps are being taken to explore possible assistance for affected farmers.
