President in the North to open several projects
View(s):President Anura Kumara Dissanayake visited Jaffna this week and participated in several groundbreaking and opening ceremonies for development projects including a housing project as well as the third phase of the Myliddy Fishery Harbour development Project.
He also opened the Jaffna Regional Office of the Department of Immigration and Emigration, located within the Jaffna District secretariat. He launched the E-Library programme at the Jaffna Public Library which would enable people worldwide to access books from the library online.
As part of the visit to the North, the President also visited the Nagadeepa Raja Maha Vihara and met with the Chief Incumbent, the Most Venerable Navadagala Padumakitti Tissa Thera.
He also participated in the Thai Pongal Festival held at the Aiyanar Kovil playground in Velanai, Jaffna and addressed a gathering there.
The President said it has been more than a year since the government took office and the year has been one in which racially motivated conflicts were at their lowest, campaigns that foster racism were weakened, and a collective movement towards national unity.
“In the past, our country has often witnessed the emergence of racist conflicts and tendencies. What we need is a prosperous nation free of racism and filled with national unity. Regardless of where one is born, the language one speaks or the religion one follows, our expectation is to create an environment in which everyone can live as proud citizens of this country with full rights,” he said.
The President also addressed a gathering at the launch of the 2026 National Housing Programme, ‘A Place to Belong – A Beautiful Life’, for 31,218 families nationwide, including 2,500 war-displaced families from the North and East. The event was held at the Weerasingham Primary School grounds in Meesalai, Chavakachcheri.
As part of the first phase of the programme to provide Rs. 2 million per house for 800 war-displaced families in the Jaffna District, cheques of Rs. 300,000 each were presented by the Minister of Housing, Construction and Water Supply, Susil Ranasinghe, the Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources, Ramalingam Chandrasekar.
The President promised to renovate Palali Airport and to expedite operations at the Kankesanthurai Port, adding that the Government of India has agreed to provide assistance of USD 60 million for this purpose.
