A group of Lankans living in the United States, together with American social service volunteers, have come forward to help address long-standing infrastructure and resource shortages at Heen Narangolla Maha Vidyalaya in Boralandha, Welimada.
The initiative was launched under the “Senahase Sathkara” programme spearheaded by Heen Narangolla Grama Niladhari R M Manjula Swarna Mali, who sought assistance from Lankans living overseas to renovate school buildings, develop the library, and establish a computer-equipped classroom.
Responding to the request, Dr Indika Perera and his American colleagues, including radiation safety officers William Hold and Ronald Leuenberg, visited the school on January 12 to assess needs and provide assistance.
The group donated schoolbooks, learning materials and uniform cloth to students, and also presented a laptop to Principal Kamani Jayathilaka to support administrative work until a new computer unit is established.
During the visit, Mr Hold also conducted a basic first-aid awareness session for students. The event, organised by the school staff, concluded with cultural performances by students, who also invited the visiting guests to join them on stage in a gesture of appreciation.
