The Kadakarai – Maliyakadu area in Kalmunai famous for its historic mosque faced severe sea erosion recently.
Ampara District MP Manjula Ratnayake on Thursday inspected the severe coastal erosion along a four-five km stretch from the Kadkarai mosque to the Maliyakadu cemetery, following rough sea conditions off the eastern coast caused by Cyclone Ditwah.
The strong waves have damaged several locations close to the shoreline, including the Siraj Meera Saib library, the Fauzi playground, the Marudun park and the Annoor cemetery. The centuries-old Kadkarai mosque, regarded as a sacred site by residents and visiting devotees, is also in this affected coastal belt.
Addressing residents, the MP said steps would be taken to renovate the eroded areas and protect all affected sites as soon as possible.
The inspection was carried out on the instructions of Deputy Minister of Rural Development, Social Security and Community Empowerment, Wasantha Piyatissa. He was accompanied by Ampara District Secretary Chinthaka Abeywickrama, the Additional Director General of the Coast Conservation Department and several government officials.
